Lomilomi massage is a Polynesian method of kneading massage, but with overtones of the indigenous religious beliefs. The word lomilomi comes from the Hawaiian and Samoan languages. Lomi means "to knead” or "to take and turn, to shift" as in "the sacred shift within you that is inspired by the healing practitioner. The smooth flow of the strokes mimic the ocean waves. A bit of history: Traditionally in ancient Hawaii lomilomi was practiced in four contexts: 1. As a healing practice of native healers -- kahuna (healers/diagnosticians) 2. As a luxury and an aid to digestion 3. As restorative massage within the family 4. By masters of the Hawaiian martial arts
